The Committee (and How to Join It)

What is the Committee and What does it do?
The Committee of the UK Magnetics Society runs the Society on behalf of the members.

Committee members are drawn from the Society membership – all committee members must be members of the Society.

It makes decisions about the running of the Society – the events, courses, partnerships, etc that we organise – as well as overseeing the back office operations – the financial management and administration. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to promote your area of magnetics and your organisation.

Roles & Responsibilities
The Committee is responsible to the membership for:

  • running a Society which is useful to its membership;
  • delivering against the goals stated in the Society’s Constitution (PDF download) “to advance the scientific, technical and practical development and application of magnetics technology and materials”;
  • successfully managing the Society so that it keeps delivering its goals year after year.

The Committee has several stated roles:

  • Committee members – decide what the Society does and oversee delivery
  • Vice-Chair / Treasurer – as Committee Member, but special responsibility for Society’s finances
  • Chair / Secretary – as Committee Member, but overall responsibility for the Society, with casting vote if required, and official point of contact for the Society.

There are also:

  • Secretariat – the non-office-holding positions delivering the day to day operations of the Society (events, admin, book-keeping, accounts, etc), under the immediate direction of the Chair and Vice-Chair, and the wider supervision of the Committee.
  • Executive – group of Chair, Vice-Chair, and Head of Secretariat which runs the Society on a day to day basis, reporting to the Committee as required or requested.

All committee members have the following and other:

  • Responsibilities – make decisions to guide the Society, and monitor the Society’s finances;
  • Opportunities – promote their area of magnetics and their organisation, and propose seminars or events;
  • Duties – attendance at QMMs, be involved in event organisation, promote the Society, and assist with technical enquiries.

How to Join the Committee

All members of the Society are invited and encouraged to apply to stand for a Committee position at the next available AGM.

It’s very easy to apply to join the committee:

  • Complete this short Committee Member Application form (Word download – basically helps you to think about what you might get out of being on the Committee, and what skills and connections you might offer).
  • Return the completed form to astewart@ukmagsoc.org
  • If selected by the current committee, stand for election at the next AGM.

Or please contact the current Chair or Vice-Chair, or astewart@ukmagsoc.org by email or in person at an event, who would all be very happy to answer any questions.
