Event

Electro-Mechanical and Systems Integration in the Aero/Auto World

UKMagSoc

Jun 11th 2018 - Jun 12th 2018

Nottingham, United Kingdom

Updated 12/06/18

This seminar will give an insight into emerging new technologies and developments related to the electrification and systems integration effort in the automotive and aerospace industries, an effort which is becoming ever-more important and resource and research demanding.

The ever-increasing pressure to achieve sustainable and most importantly more responsible transport is pushing the industry towards concepts like the more electric aircraft and the more electric engine etc… These efforts are key for modern automotive and aerospace systems, are associated with innovation and are under major focus in both industry and academia for modern applications to save energy and/or to reduce pollution.

There will be a significant number of invited contributions from researchers working in academia and in R&D in the industry sector. This will include sessions/talks on

  • Trends in electrification of automotive and aerospace systems
  • Multi-physics and inter-disciplinary design methodologies
  • Component design (electrical machines, power electronics, drive-trains)
  • Industrial needs and strategy

ACCOMODATION

The hotel on the university campus is close by the seminar venue in the Law Building. Rooms are available at the University rate of £75.00 per night single occupancy, or £85.00 per night double occupancy. The rate includes VAT and breakfast. Note, the rate might be lower on other websites depending on availability, but the £75 / £85 University rate is guaranteed. So it might be worth checking other sites to see if there’s a lower rate first.

Speakers

Electro-Mechanical Interactions in an Electric Drivetrain
by Dr Melanie Michon of Romax Technology Ltd

Recent Trends in Electric Machines for Aerospace Systems
by Mr Dean Evans of NEMA Ltd

Multiphysics Design & Simulation of Electrical Drivetrain Systems
by Mr Chris Riley of Cobham Technical Services

This paper discusses recent progress made in multiphysics simulation software for the design of electric drivetrains. A multiphysics simulation of an example 4-pole surface mount PMSM shows how temperature rise modifies the armature currents. Loss reduction in the magnets is also discussed. Interaction of an IPM with the drivetrain has been simulated by coupling an Opera electromagnetic simulation with a Romax Designer frequency domain vibration model. Finally, the planned developments in the Innovate UK supported Edison project are also presented.

Trends in Aerospace Systems Electrification
by Mr John Price of JMP Systems Engineering Ltd

John Price will talk about the exciting electric and hybrid electric flight vehicle developments taking place in many parts of the world. Although these are generally quite small vehicles from one to a few passengers, he will also mention the electrification trends in large commercial aircraft. John will mention some of the more demanding technologies to support these developments, together with changing process needs and certification.

Reliable Advanced Stop/Start System for Hybrid Electric Buses
by Mr Krzysztof Paciura of Cummins Generator Technologies

The presentation will describe journey on Advanced Propulsion Centre Project "Stop/Start System for Hybrid Electric Buses." I will explain challenges and focus on solution achieved during this project. I will also go through interaction between University of Nottingham and Cummins and how collaboration between University and Industrial partner can benefit achieving higher Manufacturing Readiness level. Due to the time constraint, I will mainly focus on power electronics part of the project.

EV Traction Motor Design
by Dr Sara Roggia of Motor Design Ltd

This presentation looks at the system interactions between the electric machine, inverter and the transmission in an EV traction application. The electric machine and inverter interaction is analysed considering the performance and losses in the electric machine when the inverter behaviour is accurately modelled. To evaluate the electric machine and transmission interaction an analysis is presented that considers the NVH response of the system including the gearbox and housing at different operating conditions.
